  • Our Boats Float! (2/1/2018)

Congratulations to the Destinations teams who participated in the cardboard boat races on Wednesday at the Belleville Wellness Centre!  The teams needed to construct a boat that would hold mass as it floated across the pool.  You learned so much about the different trades!

  • The Great School Escape! (1/29/2018)

On Friday our Destinations classes got to work together in order to “escape” the breakout rooms at Improbable Escapes in Kingston.  Let me tell you, it wasn’t easy.  They needed to think creatively, persist when their first idea didn’t work, and collaborate, collaborate, collaborate!  It was wonderful to see the amazing teamwork as they unlocked the legend of the Mayan temple, or as they broke out of detention in Love Letter Lockdown.

At the Agnes Etherington Art Centre students explored the works of artist Kent Monkman, a Canadian-Cree artist from Manitoba.  Students got a guided tour of his paintings which present a different view from the traditional take on Canadian history, and then they participated in a group discussion and art workshop where they explored their own interpretation of truth and reconciliation.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the day a success!

  • Will the Boats Float? (1/19/2018)

Today a group of Destinations students designed and constructed cardboard boats and then tested them to see which boat could hold the greatest weight.  Today’s activity was preparation for our cardboard boat teams which will be competing at the Wellness Centre on January 31st. Good luck teams!

  • Active Learning (11/10/2017)

This week more than half of Destinations participated in the recording of “Lost Boy,” one of our CBC Canadian Music Class Challenge entries.  They did a fantastic job layering instruments with voices and percussion.  Congratulations to all who participated.  I will let you know as soon as our entry is posted to the CBC YouTube channel.

The grade 7s also got active in history class this week as they moved “trees” and “rocks,” and planted and harvested “crops.”  Thankfully, all of our “New France families” survived their first year as a habitant.  To find out more, ask your grade 7 student to tell you about the game.  Happy learning!

  • Action in our Community (11/3/2017)

Over the past few weeks our grade 7 students have learned about several different community causes as they went through the process of deciding who to support in their upcoming project.  See the pictures below of our trip, our guest speakers, and to see our students already taking action!

  • Rich in Culture (11/3/2017)

During the month of October our grade 7 students shared with us some of their family traditions and stories.  We also had Mohawk languages instructor, Joe Brown, come to visit our classes and share his traditions.  We are so lucky to have such a rich and diverse cultural experience.

  • We have amazing spirit! (10/4/2017)

Many of our students showed their spirit this week by participating in the MSS spirit days.  From multiples day, to house colours and washout day, to orange shirt day, our spirit was alive.  Our Destinations Mentors also ran events on Monday afternoon to help grade 7s and grade 8s get to know each other.  So much fun!  Click on the full post to see all the pictures!
